Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s). It is used for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes and, more recently, for chronic weight management.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy®, Ozempic®, and compounded semaglutide. These medications are weekly subcutaneous injections.
Semaglutide mimics the action of a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 is produced in the gut and regulates blood sugar levels, insulin secretion, and appetite.
GLP1s stimulate insulin secretion thereby lowering blood glucose levels. Semaglutide also reduces the secretion of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels, leading to further blood sugar control.
Additionally, semaglutide slows down gastric emptying, which helps regulate the digestion process and can contribute to feelings of fullness and reduced appetite. This effect can be beneficial for individuals who are looking to manage their weight.
Sunrise also offers compounded semaglutide. Compounding is the process of combining or altering two or more drugs to create a personalized medication tailored to a patient. Although the FDA does not evaluate compounded medications, compounding helps expand patient access to life-saving medications and provides customized options for patients with specific and complex needs.
Wegovy® and Ozempic® are currently on the FDA drug shortage list, meaning compounding pharmacies can offer compounded semaglutide to expand patient access.
