What are Contrave® and naltrexone + bupropion?

Contrave® is a combination medication with two active ingredients: naltrexone and bupropion.  This medication combination may help some obese and overweight adults, who also have weight-related medical problems, lose weight and keep weight off. Contrave® is a daily tablet, and naltrexone + bupropion are two separate tablets.

The exact neurochemical effects leading to weight loss with these combined medications are not fully understood. Contrave®/naltrexone + bupropion are believed to work on two areas of the brain—the hypothalamus (your hunger center) to help reduce hunger and the mesolimbic reward system to help control cravings—that can get in the way of weight loss.
